Fresh Homemade Croutons Recipe Is Why to Save That Loaf of Bread

I had some two-day old sourdough that was past it's prime and some lovely tomato and artichoke soup, so I decided to bake some croutons. My homemade croutons were ready in a matter of minutes! This homemade crouton recipe is so easy and works with just about any kind of bread that is not very fresh.

All you need to make fresh croutons at home is stale bread, olive oil and whatever seasonings you like. The bread is seasoned, drizzled with oil and bake until golden and crunchy. Perfection!

Have fun experimenting with spice blends that you love. I used a simple shallot blend, salt and black pepper. The croutons were delicious. Add these croutons to salads, as a topping for soup or just to snack on.

Recipe Notes

  • For your bread choice, I think sourdough, French or other hearty loaf is best.
  • For seasonings, try salt, black pepper, herbs de provence, powdered cheese or ranch.
  • Every oven is a bit different, so check on the croutons as they bake so they don't overcook.

Here's how to make it:

  1. Cut bread into chunks and place in a bowl. Drizzle olive oil (don't overdo the oil, you just want a light coating). Add seasonings of your choice. Toss to coat the bread.
  2. Place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake in a preheated 350-degree F oven for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
