We are big fans of a bread or biscuit with our dinner. This slab herb biscuit recipe is so easy and so yummy! We were so pleased to find this easy homemade biscuits recipe with cheese and fresh herbs. These savory biscuits come together so easily and bake in only about 30 minutes. They are a warm delicious snack or addition to any meal.

To make these herb biscuits, you will need to gather some ingredients from your pantry and fridge. Here is what you'll need to make these biscuits today: butter, all-purpose flour, baking powder, kosher salt, gruyere cheese, a variety of fresh herbs, buttermilk and sour cream.

Serve these tender, moist, cheesy biscuits as a side dish with your favorite protein for dinner. You could even serve them hot out of the oven for breakfast with honey. If you ever needed an excuse to plant an herb garden, this easy recipe is it!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted, for brushing pan
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 8 ounces gruyere cheese, freshly grated
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, chives, parsley, sage, etc.)
  • 1 cup buttermilk (see Recipe Notes) 
  • 1 cup sour cream

  • Instead of buttermilk, you could use 1 cup milk plus 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice or white vinegar.
  • Keep the biscuits in an airtight container for up to four days on the counter or in the refrigerator.

Here's how to make it: 

  • Place the 1/2 cup of butter into the freezer.
  • Melt the 2 tablespoon butter in the microwave and preheat your oven to 425 degrees F.
  • Brush the melted butter in a 13x9-inch baking pan or similar-sized pan. Set aside.
  • In a medium bowl mix whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Remove butter from the freezer and using a box grater, grate into the dry ingredients. Use clean hands and press the butter into the flour mixture combining the best you can.
  • Mix in the gruyere cheese and fresh herbs.
  • Add the buttermilk and sour cream. Mix until combined.
  • Combine with the flour mixture.
  • Press the mixture into the prepared pan.
  • Use a serrated knife to pre-cut your biscuits and then place into the oven for 30 to 35 minutes until cooked through and golden brown.
  • Remove from oven and cool for 5 to 10 minutes before cutting.
