Recipe Notes

  • If you can't find bulk Italian sausage, buy links and remove the casings.
  • Instead of heavy cream, you could use nut milk, evaporated milk or half and half.
  • You can reduce the sodium in this recipe by using no-salt tomato sauce and low-sodium chicken broth or water.

Here's how to make it:

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, warm the oil. Add the onion and cook it for 3 minutes, or until it becomes translucent.
  2. Add the Italian sausage into the pan, cooking until the sausage is crumbled and well browned.
  3. Stir in the garlic cloves, then add the Italian seasoning and crushed red pepper flakes. Add the chicken broth or water, scraping the bottom of the pan to loosen any stuck bits. Add the tomato sauce and stir to combine. Simmer on low, uncovered, for about 8 to 10 minutes.
  4. Lower the heat, stir in the heavy cream and add the fresh gnocchi. Cover the pan and simmer for about 5 minutes, or until the gnocchi is cooked and has absorbed some of the sauce.
  5. Stir in the Parmesan and basil, then season to taste. Serve immediately with extra grated Parmesan and garnish with fresh basil.
