Homemade Hand-Formed Asian Potsticker Dumplings Recipe Is a Family Affair by Chef Gigi

Homemade Hand-Formed Asian Potsticker Dumplings Recipe Is a Family Affair

It's a mystery the exact place potstickers were first created, though some say it was in China's Imperial Court. Funny thing is, it's said to have been a culinary accident when the chef burnt the bottoms of a batch of dumplings. Potsticker dumplings are not hard to make at home and are a fun family activity. While you can use a potsticker maker, these are hand-formed, which is simple!

To make these homemade potstickers you will need ground pork, an egg, sesame oil, chili oil or paste, cornstarch, fresh ginger, garlic, vegetable oil, carrots, green onions, cilantro, black pepper and potsticker wrappers.

You can serve these easy homemade Asian dumplings with a side of soy sauce as an appetizer, or try my homemade potsticker sauce (see Recipe Notes). These are great as part of an Asian dinner or served as an appetizer.

Recipe Notes

  • These homemade potsticker dumplings are delicious served with soy sauce, but you can make a homemade potsticker sauce by combining 4 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce, 1 1/2 tablespoons rice vinegar, 1 1/2 tablespoons rice wine and 1 teaspoon chili oil or chili paste.
  • Try this recipe with ground chicken or ground turkey.

Here's how to make it:

  1. In a large bowl, combine all the filling ingredients except potsticker wrappers and mix well to combine. Keep cold by placing the bowl on a more giant, lightly ice-filled bowl.
  2. Fill the wonton wrapper with a tablespoon of pork filling. Do not overfill.
  3. Wet your finger with water and run along the edges of the wonton wrapper to seal it closed by folding the wrapper over the filling to create a half-moon shape, pinching the edges to seal.
  4. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the skillet and place dumplings in an even layer. Fry for a few minutes until the bottoms are golden.
  5. Add 1/4 cup of water and cover with a tight-fitting lid. Cook until the water has boiled away, and then uncover and reduce heat to medium or medium-low. Cook for another 2 minutes, remove from heat.
  6. Serve with soy sauce or homemade potsticker sauce and thinly sliced green onions.
