Easy Black & Blue Berry Smoothie Recipe Means No More Blackberry Seeds In Your Teeth by Elisa Schmitz

Easy Black & Blue Berry Smoothie Recipe Means No More Blackberry Seeds In Your Teeth

If you're like me, you may avoid eating blackberries because of the seeds that tend to get stuck in your teeth. Those seeds are not only annoying, but are also not a good look if you're out and about without your dental floss!

It turns out those seeds help to make blackberries extra nutritious, adding lots of fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. According to the Cleveland Clinic, blackberries have been used throughout history to heal a wide range of illnesses. And, research shows that antioxidants found in blackberries may reduce inflammation and prevent many diseases, including cancer.

I learned that if you put blackberries into a good blender (like my new Breville Super Q blender), those seeds get ground up pretty well, making them much easier to tolerate. Getting in all that nutrition without a single blackberry seed stuck in my teeth? Yes, please!

Blueberries are also a potent sources of antioxidants that help protect cells from damage by free radicals. Blueberries help prevent cholesterol, improve heart and bone health, and can help with blood pressure and diabetes.

That's why I combined these two superfoods into one super smoothie. This easy black and blue berry smoothie recipe jumpstarts your day nutritiously and deliciously. All you need for this energizing beverage are blackberries, blueberries, milk, a banana, orange juice, yogurt, honey and a few ice cubes. Five minutes later, you'll be sipping a refreshing beverage that'll power you up for breakfast, or as a snack any time of day.

Recipe Notes

  • If you don't have fresh blackberries or blueberries, you can use frozen berries.
  • For a more shake-like consistency, you can use a frozen banana (or two, if you want a thicker smoothie).
  • To make this smoothie dairy-free, you can use dairy-free milk (I used almond milk) and dairy-free yogurt (I used coconut-milk-based yogurt).
  • To add even more nutrition, you can add a teaspoon of flaxseed or protein powder.
  • I use biodegradable paper straws, which are better for the environment than plastic straws.
  • Garnish with orange slices, if desired.

Here's how you make it:

  1. Put all the ingredients into a blender.
  2. Blend until smooth.
  3. Pour into your favorite smoothie glasses. Garnish with orange slices, if desired, and enjoy the berry smooth goodness!
