Warning Signs of Bullying: 12 Signs Kids May Be Bullied & What Parents Can Do

School bullies don’t always openly threaten their victims – some of them have charisma, the respect of their teachers and good social skills – yet they still inflict emotional harm on victims that can last decades, researchers say. Victims of bullying and other early trauma may carry emotional scars into adulthood. But adults can help reduce the trauma of bullying for young people by recognizing the warning signs and talking to them. These include:

Emotional upset, anxiousness and sadness.

Frequent headaches and stomachaches.

Faking illness.

Unexplained injuries.

Changes in eating habits.

Poor sleep/frequent nightmares.

A drop in school performance.

Not wanting to go to school.

Sudden loss of friends.

Avoidance of social situations.

Low self-esteem.

Self-destructive behaviors including self-harm, running away or talking about suicide.

If you see your child struggling with any of these issues, talk with him or her about what’s going on. Talking with your children is the key both to preventing bullying and to uncovering and soothing the emotional trauma it can cause.

I saw first hand how bullying can be very different from what we think of as bullying. It is often not physical in nature, and some kids choose to taunt, push buttons, and alienate some children who are struggling. And often the parents do not step in to handle things, and school administrators also drop the ball. It is such an awful thing for any child to go through. Advocate for your kids until you are blue in the face.

Thank you, a very necessary and informative article. Unfortunately, I had a similar experience, when my child was faced with bullying at school, it was a very difficult period. I began to study the question a bit, read many articles and unfortunately this is a fairly common occurrence in our society. We tried different ways to avoid this and only a few months later the first results appeared. I even had to go to schools and talk with the principal and teachers.
