COVID Vaccine Booster Shots: How the COVID-19 Booster Shot Got Me Featured on Good Morning America

Weeks ago I was approached to be interviewed for a segment on Good Morning America discussing booster shots for the COVID-19 vaccine. The reason? I had received a booster shot on September 3, 2021, and happened to tweet that I received it and was thankful for science.

In a true example of “you never know who is looking at your social media accounts,” a producer from GMA sent me a direct message on Twitter, asked me if I wanted to share my experience without any “gotcha” questions, and within 20 minutes I was in a Zoom call sharing my thoughts!

A few of you may be wondering how a 33-year-old woman could have gotten the booster shot so early. A few years ago I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, and the medication I take suppresses my immune system, making me immunocompromised. In my interview I shared why I qualified, my thoughts on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) limiting who can get the third shot of Pfizer/Moderna and what my message would be to all of those still wondering if the vaccine is right for them.

I’ll share my thoughts here: I believe in scientists. I trust my various doctors, all of whom agreed this was right for me. I understand that my immune system doesn’t operate in the same capacity as people with “normal” functioning immune systems. I also believe that the best way to protect yourself, your family and your greater community is to listen to the medical and science communities. Please explore peer-reviewed research or valid sources and don’t listen to Facebook memes, regardless of whichever “side” of the political spectrum you find yourself in.

One final thought: if you trust the medical community to take care of you if you get sick, listen to them BEFORE you get sick.

I'm so glad you shared this experience with us, Beth Dixon ! I love the section Elisa A. Schmitz 30Seconds pointed to. I love this one, too: "I believe in scientists. I trust my various doctors, all of whom agreed this was right for me. I understand that my immune system doesn’t operate in the same capacity as people with “normal” functioning immune systems. I also believe that the best way to protect yourself, your family and your greater community is to listen to the medical and science communities.
