Cancer News: Scientists Find New Biomarkers That May Warn of Cancer Seven Years In Advance by 30Seconds Health

The research suggests that these links could be vital to unprecedented cancer treatment and survival, as these biomarkers may be able to warn physicians of cancer seven full years ahead of the cancer’s full proliferation.

Cells, Cell Death and Cancer

If you’ve studied any form of biology, then you know what a cell is. In its simplest terms, a cell is a microscopic organism that creates and maintains part of a biological organism. The human body is made up of trillions of cells, and these cells are responsible for everything that happens to our body. Our blood cells carry oxygen and fight infections, our skin cells provide a protective covering from disease for our muscles and organs, bone cells provide strength to our skeletal system which provides a solid structure to our body and protects our vital organs, and so forth.

The thing about cells is, that just like the things they build, they are biological. Which means like all things that live, they die. However, cells have amazing DNA structures that give them the ability to procreate asexually in a process called cell division. The most amazing thing about this process is that evolution has developed so that cells divide at an exact ratio to the number of cells that die, ensuring that our body lives in a state of harmony with itself. Cells die, are flushed or otherwise discarded by the body, and new cells are created to take their place.

“Cancer” is the term given to several diseases that happen when this harmony is upset. When the DNA in a cell mutates unfavorably or is damaged somehow, the cell may continue its division instead of dying and being replaced; and since cells reproduce asexually and therefore offspring are essentially genetic “clones” of their forbears, the damage or mutation becomes part of the new cells as well.

This leads to uncontrolled cell growth, and as the body produces more of these cells, the defensive systems of the body are overwhelmed.

The New Research

In 2024, two studies were released in the online medical journal, Nature Communications, one on April 29th and the other on May 15th. The April study found that there were observable associations between 40 different plasma proteins and many common cancers. The May study found more than 300 plasma proteins that served as biomarkers for cancer, 107 of which were associated with cancers that would normally go undiagnosed for seven years or more.

Plasma proteins are specialized substances in the plasma, the part of the blood that carries nutrients, delivers hormones and transports proteins to the body, while also aiding in the movement of waste products. They are also responsible for helping transport blood cells throughout the circulatory system.

The research found that the particular proteins they were studying were not the cause of cancer, but rather their presence is an indication that there may be cancerous cells present within the body. In other words, the research is still very much in the area of correlation, rather than causation – and research is ongoing to determine exactly how this new knowledge can be helpful.

One clear statement is that these proteins are a regular occurrence within the body, and their presence alone is not enough to constitute a cancer diagnosis. The forced control and manipulation of these proteins can result in cancer and numerous other diseases. Researchers are currently stipulating the importance of patience and further study in the use of this new knowledge, and that this is more a case of a very strong potential avenue of more study into effective cancer treatment.

Where to From Here?

Cancer research is a very diverse topic, with decades of scientific history, study and knowledge behind it. These two studies are merely the most recent developments, the most recent volume in a library spanning centuries, millennia even. There is no officially released statement yet as to where the research will go from here, and with a matter as complex as this layman’s conjecture is quite ineffective save in the broadest possible strokes.

As research continues, this information can represent a new kind of hope for cancer sufferers and those predisposed to developing cancer. However, until this research can be used in real-world practical applications, the official position on cancer is that prevention (or at least minimizing the chance of developing cancerous cells) is far better than cure.

There are many methods of decreasing your risk of getting cancer. Avoiding tobacco, a nutritious diet, maintaining weight, physical exercise, protection from UV rays, vaccination against diseases that increase cancer risk, regular medical care, regular cancer screenings, and a variety of other lifestyle choices can all play a huge part in decreasing any individual’s susceptibility to cancer.

It is important to remember that although cancer is currently the second highest cause of death around the world, most cancer patients survive, especially where quality medical research and care are easily available to the populace. Additionally, as research continues and more effective methods of treatment are found, it is projected that the number of people who survive a cancer diagnosis will rise exponentially. In short, while things might look grim, the modern reality and projected future for cancer patients is inherently optimistic.
