Meet my new favorite, healthy drink! Last week I had the flu and two different friends suggested this Ayurvedic remedy that has two healing foods: ginger root and turmeric root. Ginger and turmeric have anti-inflammatory properties and they both continue to be two of the most studied ingredients in herbal medicine. According to many studies, ginger and turmeric have also been used to help relieve pain, decrease nausea and enhance immune function to help protect against certain illness and infections.
I've always appreciated whole food-based recipes to enhance my family's health, so I was all for trying this new ginger and turmeric drink. What I really found when I made this tea is that it is so good I then turned it into a mocktail and loved it! All week I drank it hot and cold, although both my friends recommended hot when I was sick.
If you want it a bit sweeter add local honey (it's unprocessed and helps with local allergies. too). You'll only need these five simple ingredients: fresh ginger, turmeric root (read about the health benefits of turmeric), local honey, fresh lemons and just a dash of pepper for absorption. Either hot or cold, this tea is one of my new favorite beverages with benefits!
Turmeric marks your fingers with it's beautiful yellow-orange color, so use care when chopping. If you do get some on your skin don't worry, a little fresh lemon juice helps to remove it. My stained skin was gone the next day.
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 2 inches of ginger root, peeled and cut into small pieces
- 2 inches of turmeric root, peeled and cut into small pieces
- 1 lemon, sliced
- 1 lemon, for juice
- local honey
- dash of black pepper (freshly ground if you have it)
Here's how to make it:
- Fill a medium saucepot with 6 cups of water. Peel and chop turmeric, ginger and slice 1 lemon. Add all ingredients to the water, add a twist or pinch of fresh pepper and heat on high until it comes to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for up to 30 minutes. When finished, add a bit of honey, if desired, and stir. This is now the concentrate of your tea.
- To drink, pour mixture through a strainer and fill your cup half full. Add a squeeze of lemon juice and hot or cold water (depending on if it's hot or cold) to fill. Top with a sprig of fresh mint if you'd like. Here's a toast to better health for us all!
