It makes perfect sense that March 11 was National Napping Day because we all "sprang forward" on Sunday, losing an hour of precious sleep. A certain percentage of the population already considers themselves expert nappers (my former college roommate and husband are among them – #anytime, #anywhere), but not all of us can be so lucky.
According to the National Day Calendar, several studies have revealed a short 10- to 20-minute nap is actually the most effective when you start to hit that inevitable midday slowdown. A successful catnap gives you increased alertness, productivity and mood. What's not to love?! So, what can we do to maximize our napping efforts for the remainder of 2018?
- Keep them short! Any more than 30 minutes will just make you groggy with regret.
- Aim for mid-afternoon. The Mayo Clinic says between 2 and 3 p.m. seems to be the sweet spot.
- Be mindful of your surroundings. Keep it quiet, dark, comfortable and free of distractions.
