If you've never had authentic Spanish sangria before, let me highly recommend it. Red sangria is like fruit punch for adults, and this easy sangria roja recipe is love at first sip.
Sangria is a red wine cocktail that is thought to have originated in Spain. Similar to a spirited fruit punch, sangria roja recipes can vary depending on where you go. But the basic ingredients for sangria are always a red wine such as Spanish Rioja, an additional spirit such as brandy, a sweetener such as honey or maple syrup, and fresh fruit such as oranges, apples, peaches, nectarines, pears, lemons, limes and berries.
This authentic Spanish sangria recipe uses these four simple ingredients: Spanish Rioja wine, brandy, honey and diced fresh fruit. All you do is mix the liquid ingredients in a pitcher over the diced fruit. It's best to let the sangria set in the refrigerator for a few hours before serving, so the flavors can meld. Serve over ice with additional diced fruit on top. If you like, you can top your sangria with a splash of sparkling water and garnish with lemon or orange slices.
Serve this refreshing sangria cocktail recipe for your next get-together, or anytime you want to feel like you're on vacation even when you're just sitting in your favorite comfy chair. Cheers! Salud!
Cuisine: Spanish
Prep Time: 10 minutes plus at least 4 hours to chill
Cook Time: 0 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes plus chill time
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 1 bottle (750ml) Spanish red wine
- 1/2 cup brandy
- 2 tablespoons honey (or sweetener of choice)
- 3 1/2 - 4 cups diced fresh fruit, divided (such as oranges, apples, pears, lemons, limes, lemon, peaches, pears, nectarines, berries, etc.)
- ice for serving
Recipe Notes
- I used a bottle of Spanish Rioja, but any fruity red wine should do in a pinch.
- I used French Cognac brandy, but any brandy should work. You also could use Triple Sec or Cointreau.
- I used honey, but you also could use pure maple syrup (not the imitation stuff) or simple syrup.
- I used an orange, an apple, a pear, a lime, a peach and a nectarine, and I garnished with lemon slices. Feel free to use your favorite fresh fruits.
- Wash the fruit well before using, especially since you will be leaving the peels on.
- For best flavor, allow to chill in the refrigerator for at least four hours, or overnight, before serving.
- Serve over ice in your favorite wine or cocktail glasses with additional diced fruit on top. Garnish with a slice of citrus fruit or fresh berries, if desired.
- You can top your sangria with a splash of sparkling water or lemon-lime soda, if you'd like some bubbles.
- Be sure to eat some of the "drunken fruit" after finishing your refreshing glass of sangria. So good! Plus, check out the health benefits of oranges, the health benefits of apples and the health benefits of pears.
- Store leftovers in a covered pitcher or an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Here's how to make it:
- Dice fruit and put 3 cups of it into the bottom of a pretty pitcher. Reserve the rest for topping the sangria.
- Add the wine, brandy and honey to the pitcher. Stir to combine with the fruit.
- Put pitcher into the refrigerator and allow to chill at least 4 hours (or overnight) before serving.
- Serve over ice in your favorite cocktail or wine glasses. Top with additional diced fruit. Garnish with a slice of citrus fruit, if desired.
