Mini French Onion Tarts Recipe Deliciously Ups Your Appetizer Game

I’ve been upping my appetizer game! My family really loved these mini onion tartlets. They reminded me of French onion soup, but in a little cheesy bite that is warm, savory and so delicious. This is one hot appetizer recipe everyone will enjoy!

To make these mini French onion tarts you will need just a few simple ingredients. Here is what you need to grab at the store or order from the links below: butter, onions, granulated sugar, salt, heavy cream, an egg, ground nutmeg, mini phyllo pastry shells or phyllo sheets, gruyere cheese and optional fresh chives for garnishing.

If you can find the pastry shells they work great, but I couldn’t so I improvised with the phyllo sheets. Phyllo sheets are light and flaky and worked out well. Serve these mini onion tartlets as an appetizer or even as a light vegetarian lunch or dinner with a side salad

Recipe Notes

  • If using phyllo shells, line a baking sheet with parchment. Place shells on the parchment and spoon about 1/2 teaspoon onion mixture in the shells and top with the cream mixture until the cups are 3/4 full. Top with cheese. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until they are a golden brown.
  • Be sure to finely chop the onions for this recipe.
  • Fresh thyme would be delicious sprinkled on top of these onion tarts.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge.

Here's how to make it:

  1. Place a Dutch oven or large pot on the stove on medium heat with the butter. When the butter is melted add onions, sugar and 1 teaspoon of salt. Stir frequently until onions are soft, about 10 minutes.
  2. Turn heat down to medium-low and continue to cook the onion mixture, stirring every now and then, until the ingredients become thick and similar to jam, about 30 minutes. When they are done, move mixture to a bowl.
  3. Turn your oven to 350 degrees F. In a liquid measuring cup mix egg, cream, nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  4. If you are using phyllo shells, see Recipe Notes. If you are using phyllo sheets fold one in half and the fold into a quarter and place into a mini muffin pan.
  5. Add onion mixture, cream and top with cheese.
  6. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until they are a golden brown.
  7. Top with chives, if desired, and serve warm or at room temperature and enjoy!
