Savory Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken Recipe Is a Crowd Pleaser

This honey garlic chicken is such a tasty and easy slow-cooker recipe. I made it for my family and everyone loved it so much I made it again shortly after. After browning the chicken on the stove, you just pop everything into a slow cooker and it's ready in a few hours. And to make it really easy I used frozen rice in a pouch to place under the chicken and cooked up a broccoli side dish. This slow-cooker honey garlic chicken recipe is a wonderfully balanced dinner with easy prep and minimal cleanup!

To make this Asian-inspired chicken dinner you will need boneless chicken thighs, garlic powder, ground paprika, kosher salt, canola oil, honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, fresh ginger, fresh garlic, butter and cornstarch. While the ingredients cook up in the slow cooker, go on with your day!

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 12 medium-sized skinless, boneless chicken thighs
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons grated peeled fresh ginger
  • 8 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 cup butter, chopped
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • sliced green onions, for serving
  • cooked rice, for serving

Recipe Notes

  • All slow cookers cook a little different, so if you are unsure if your chicken is cooked through, use a meat thermometer to check temperature. The chicken is done at 165 degrees F.
  • You could use boneless chicken breasts for this recipe, though thighs do stay more moist.

Here's how to make it: 

  1. Combine the garlic powder, salt and paprika in a small bowl.
  2. Season one side of the chicken with the seasoning blend. Heat a large skillet with the oil over medium-high. When the pan is hot gently place the chicken, seasoned side down, into the hot oil and sear thighs for 3 minutes on the seasoned side only. Place the chicken thighs into the slow cooker with the seared side up.
  3. Make the honey sauce in a bowl by combining soy sauce, vinegar, honey, ginger and garlic. Mix well.
  4. Pour sauce over the chicken. Place the butter pieces on top. Cover and cook on low for 5 to 6 hours or high for 3 to 4 hours.
  5. When the chicken is tender remove it from the slow cooker to a plate. Add cornstarch and 3 tablespoons of water to a small bowl. Whisk to combine.
  6. Pour the cornstarch slurry into the slow cooker and whisk well.
  7. Return the chicken to the slow cooker.
  8. Serve warm over rice with the sauce and a sprinkle of green onions for a beautiful garnish!
