The Easiest & Creamiest Homemade Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe Ever

I prefer baking to cooking. In part because I find it easier and, in part, because I find that I, personally, can be more creative with baking. For the longest time it didn’t occur to me to make my own frosting. I just bought canned frosting at the grocery store. Then I realized the error of my ways! First, homemade frosting tastes so much better. Also, homemade frosting is easy to make, freezable and inexpensive. Once you make your own, you may never buy store-bought frosting again!

This cream cheese frosting recipe is made with only five ingredients and a pinch of salt. Truth be told, I love desserts but I don’t love overly sweet frosting. I like this frosting because it’s a little less sweet than buttercream. You can even freeze this cream cheese frosting! When you’re ready to use it, just thaw the frosting in the fridge overnight.

This sweet creamy cream cheese frosting recipe is also versatile. It works well for cakescupcakes, even sugar cookies. It’s perfect for my younger son’s birthday cake because he doesn’t like overly sweet frosting either. I’m sure I’ll make it again well before his birthday. Why wait for a special occasion?

Once you’re comfortable with the basic cream cheese frosting recipe, you can customize it by experimenting with other flavors, such as lemon or orange zest, lemon and lime zest, strawberry, salted caramel, peanut butter, unsweetened cocoa, coconut extract, almond extract or mint extract. This cream cheese is delicious on carrot cake or carrot cake muffins! How will you use it?

Servings: Makes about 2 cups


  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
  • 5 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature  
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Here’s how to make it:

  1. In a large bowl, beat butter and cream cheese on medium high until creamy, about 1 to 2 minutes.
  2. Lower the speed and add the powdered sugar 1 cup at a time, beating well between each addition. 
  3. Add the salt, heavy whipping cream and vanilla. Beat until fluffy, about 2 to 3 minutes.
