Giada De Laurentiis’s Top 5 Recipes of 2022: 10-Minute Neapolitan-style Pizza Dough Recipe

Giada De Laurentiis is one of my favorite celebrity chefs. She recently shared her “top 5 recipes of 2022” and her famous Neapolitan-style pizza dough is one of them. I have always been intimated by the idea of making my own pizza dough, but with this easy Neapolitan-style pizza dough recipe, even I can handle it. And it only takes 10 minutes to make.

Americans have enjoyed pizza for well over a century. A pizza place in New York City, Lombardi’s, is most commonly cited as America’s first pizzeria. The pizza restaurant opened in Little Italy in 1905. There’s no doubt that Americans across the U.S. have had a bit of a love affair with pizza as a favorite for lunch or dinner over the years.

When I was growing up in upstate New York, Friday night was always pizza night, and I’ve kept this tradition going with my own family. With the increase in prices of both groceries and dining out, it seems to me that the most economical way to continue enjoying pizza, especially on a weekly basis, is to make your own! Thanks to Giada’s homemade pizza dough recipe, it's easy to do.

Cuisine: Italian
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 0 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Servings: Makes 1 large pizza

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • extra virgin olive oil

Here's how to make it:

  1. Add the yeast and honey to the warm water. Stir to dissolve. Allow the mixture to sit for 3 minutes to make sure the yeast is alive. It should foam and start to bubble.
  2. Place the flour and salt in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a dough hook. Add the yeast mixture and mix on low speed until the mixture starts to comes together. Turn the speed up to medium and mix for 8 minutes. The dough should start to pull away from the sides but still remain soft and slightly sticky at the bottom of the bowl (add an extra tablespoon of flour if needed).
  3. Coat your hands in a bit of olive oil and form the dough into a ball. Place the dough in a bowl that is coated in olive oil. Cover with a towel and allow to sit in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size. Knock down the dough and cut into four equal pieces if making small pizzas or simply reform into a ball and allow the dough to proof for an additional 1 hour. The dough is now ready to use.
