No-Fuss Caramelized Onions Recipe: How to Make Caramelize Onions in the Oven

Caramelized onions are just plain delicious. Soft, sweet and creamy, they add so much to so many dishes. Cooking them on the stovetop in a skillet is a tedious task. It requires a lot of stirring, and because of the direct heat on the bottom of the pan, they can burn easily if you step away. The solution? Make caramelized onions in the oven!

The secret to caramelizing onions in the oven is to add olive oil and water, which helps them steam and soften. You still have to stir, but without direct heat, there's less chance that they'll burn. Caramelized onions can be used on burgers, pizza, in dips, as a steak topping, on baked potatoes, toast and meatloaf, and on sandwiches.

All you need to cook caramelized onions in the oven is large yellow, white or red onions, olive oil and water. That's it. What's your favorite way to eat caramelized onions?

Here's how to make it:

  1. Put the sliced onions onto a baking sheet that's been lined with parchment paper.
  2. Add the olive oil and water. Season with salt and pepper. Toss to coat.
  3. Bake in a preheated 400-degree F oven until golden brown, about 45 minutes. Stir every 10 minutes.
