Recipe Notes

  • If you prefer a dairy-free version, you could leave out the milk or cream, but it would be less creamy.
  • You can add more or less milk, depending on your preferred consistency.
  • Serve with warm bread, breadsticks or croutons, if desired. Garnish with parsley or cilantro, if you like.
  • Store the soup in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop in a saucepot.
  • This soup freezes well – you may want to have some in reserve for a rainy (or snowy) day!

Here's how to make it:

  1. Put all the ingredients except the milk into a soup pot. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer gently for about 2 1/2 to 3 hours, stirring often.
  2. Remove the ham bone and pick off any meat.
  3. Using an immersion blender, blend until almost smooth. (You could also push the soup through a mesh strainer.)
  4. Stir in the milk and season with salt and pepper. Put the ham meat back into the pot. Serve.
