Sitting beside a river can be one of the most relaxing things on earth to some people. What's more tranquil than a gently flowing river and the sounds of a river band (aka crickets, frogs, birds, etc.)? If you're not lucky enough to live near a river or don't have time to take a trip, you can bring the river inside with these printable relaxing river coloring pages.
How much do you know about rivers? According to National Geographic, "A river is a large, natural stream of flowing water. Rivers are found on every continent and on nearly every kind of land. Some flow all year round. Others flow seasonally or during wet years. A river may be only meters long or it may span much of a continent."
Here are some fun facts about rivers:
- Two of the world's longest rivers are the Nile River in Africa (4,135 miles long) and the Amazon River (4,000 miles long) in South America.
- The Congo River in Central Africa is the world's deepest river, with depths reaching over 720 feet. In some parts, the river plunges to depths exceeding 755 feet, which is deep enough to submerge the Eiffel Tower.
- Rivers are some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. Rivers sustain more fish species than the sea even though they contain 600 times less water.
- The place where it starts is called the source. The source of a river is usually from a hill or a mountain. Most rivers start off as a little stream, and lots of small streams end up meeting and then become a river.
While river therapy is definitely a mindfulness activity, so is coloring. "Coloring gives our mind a focus which can help us temporarily let go of or detach from some of our stressful thoughts, or at least postpone giving these thoughts energy until the end of the coloring session (or another more appropriate time)," according to Mayo Clinic. So we think river therapy and coloring is the perfection relaxing combination!
