It's dragonfly season! If you're like me, you look forward to seeing the dragonflies appear each spring and summer. To me, the dragonfly is a symbol of positive change, transformation and resilience. From its birth in the water to its ability to take flight in any direction (including backward), the dragonfly is truly an inspirational creature.
Dragonflies are among the world’s fastest flying insects, which isn't surprising given they were some of the first winged insects to evolve about 300 million years ago (even before the dinosaurs). It's said that early relatives of dragonflies had wingspans longer than 2 feet! Today, there are more than 3,000 known species of dragonflies, and they live on every continent except Antarctica. Dragonflies can be found by clean, fresh water (such as lakes, rivers and ponds).
Dragonflies have huge eyes that provide them with panoramic vision, enabling them to see at just about every angle. This helps make them incredible predators – an adult dragonfly can catch more than 30 mosquitoes a day. That's another reason I love seeing them buzz around – simply delightful!
