- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 3 shallots, sliced
- 6 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
- 1/3 cup chopped red bell pepper
- 3 Thai chiles (optional)
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons fish sauce
- 6 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
- 3 teaspoons oyster sauce
- 2 tablespoons chili garlic sauce
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1 cup julienned basil leaves

Here's how to make it:
- Heat the oil in a large skillet or wok. Add the shallots, garlic, ginger, bell pepper and Thai chiles, if using. Cook, stirring, for about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Add the ground beef. Cook, breaking it up into small pieces, until cooked through and browned.
- In a bowl, combine the sugar, fish sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, garlic chili sauce, broth, water and cornstarch. Whisk to combine.
- Pour the mixture into the pan with the ground beef. Cook, stirring, about 2 to 4 minutes or until thickened. Season with black pepper.
- Stir in the basil leaves and cook about 1 more minute.
