As Evie shares: "A few weeks after my mother died in November 2022, one of my roommates sent me a lovely note of condolence ... she reminded me that not long after we graduated, she was working on a cookbook for her high school and my mother sent her this receipt to include in it. I had completely forgotten about this, and I know my mother had, too ... Receiving the receipt again weeks after I lost Mom was such a gift to me. We baked the pie for our first Thanksgiving without Mom and I felt her every step of the way. There is a lot of love in this delicious pie."

Ingredients

• 1 9-inch unbaked pie shell, unfrozen
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 1/2 cup flour (all-purpose or gluten-free flour)
• large pinch of salt
• 2 large eggs
• 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
• 2 tablespoons bourbon (or more, to taste)
• 1 cup pecans
• 1 cup chocolate chips

Here's how to make it:

1. Blind bake the pie shell or prepare it according to package directions. (My store-bought pie shell did not require blind baking, just defrosting.)
2. In a large mixing bowl, add the sugar, flour and salt. Whisk to combine.
   
3. In a medium mixing bowl, add the eggs, melted butter and bourbon. Whisk to combine.
   
4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and whisk or stir to combine.
   
5. Add the pecans and chocolate chips. Stir to combine.
   
6. Pour the mixture into the pie shell, ensuring it's evenly distributed.
   
7. Bake in an oven that's been preheated to 325 degrees F until the edges of the crust and the top of the pie are golden brown and the center is firm, about 40 to 50 minutes.
   
8. Allow pie to cool completely before cutting and serving. Top with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired. Store leftover pie in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat briefly in the microwave, if desired.
