Adrenal Fatigue: A Common Cause of Relationship Stress With a Very Surprising Symptom Women's Health Men's Health
Adrenal fatigue is a condition caused by the stress of modern life. Most illnesses occur in phases. For example, diabetes and heart attacks used to be extraordinarily rare 500 years ago and now are the biggest killers. Adrenal fatigue is now becoming an epidemic. Estimates are that it affects 16 to 67 percent of the population at different levels of severity.
The adrenal is our body’s stress handler. Most of us learned about the "fight or flight" reaction to stress in grade school. If we were under attack, our adrenal glands would fire to raise our blood sugar to supply quick energy to fight or run. Through most of human history, this might occur once every couple months. Now, with the increased speed of modern life, the fight or flight reaction is often being triggered dozens of times every day. This can cause exhaustion of the adrenal stress handler glands. Sadly, physicians are not trained about this. Rather, we are only trained about illnesses that destroy the adrenal gland, called Addison’s disease. This only affects about one in 10,000 people. As we have no clear-cut medical definition yet for adrenal fatigue, many doctors even make-believe it does not exist. Sadly, this is what medicine historically has also done for multiple sclerosis, lupus and fibromyalgia.
How do you know if you have adrenal fatigue? The easiest way to tell is if you get irritable when hungry. This has been called “hangry.” Interestingly, I find that many people have relationship stresses caused by these drops in blood sugar from adrenal fatigue. When they treat the adrenal fatigue, the moodiness often goes away, making the adrenal treatment, at 40 cents a day, much cheaper and more effective than marital counseling or divorce lawyers. So, if you get irritable when hungry, let your partner know not to reason with you or try to console you. Just feed you. If the moods are coming from adrenal fatigue, they will be gone within five minutes after eating.
Chronic stress causes adrenal fatigue and low blood sugars, which then triggers anxiety, fatigue and even more stress. Fortunately, this vicious cycle can be easily broken. Supplementing people with adrenal glandulars, vitamins C and B5, licorice and tyrosine (all of which can be found in combination in a supplement called Adrenaplex for just 40 cents a day) will usually take care of the problem within a week.
