Lacking Motivation to Tackle Your To-Do List? 6 Simple Steps to Get Things Done

Some mornings, I feel like hibernating when I see the length of my to-do list for the day ahead. So let me share with you the strategy I use that never fails to kickstart me into taking action. Follow these simple steps whenever a motivation meltdown strikes!

1. Visualize the End Results As If You've Already Achieved It

Make one big, bold picture in full color of you already having successfully done whatever you've been lacking the motivation to do! Make the picture perfect – with everything having gone exactly how you would like it to. Make the image nearer to you and clearer, the colors richer and brighter. Add in any sounds and adjust the clarity, tone, or pitch of the sound, so it's perfect, too.

2. Float or Step Into the Picture

Imagine stepping into the picture and floating into your own body when the image is perfect. Take time to connect with that image fully. Allow yourself to see and hear what's happening around you and experience your emotions.

3. Feel How Good It Feels

Let the feel-good feelings work their way right through you. Breathe them in and let them permeate through every pore of your body.

4. Anchor Those Feelings

When those good feelings are at their height, squeeze your thumb and middle finger together for around 8 to 10 seconds. Associating or “anchoring” these positive feelings to this simple physical action will enable you to squeeze your thumb and finger together at any time in the future and, in an instant, bring those same feelings back.

5. Now, Work Backwards From There to Construct Your Plan

Knowing how good you will feel when your tasks are done, work backwards from there: construct your plan, chunk it down, and envision the steps you need to take.

6. Get Started and Take Consistent Action!

Squeeze your thumb and finger together again to refuel the “end result” feelings, then start to take the necessary action, one next best step at a time. All the while, keep your eye on the “feel-good prize” of when all the tasks on your to-do list are done!

One way to boost motivation on difficult days is simply to plan for them. As you think about your goal, jot down a list of the things. Think about how to include that goal in your life, what you need to do to make it happen.
