Floating Into Mindfulness: How to Turbocharge Your Meditation Like Pro Athletes & Celebrities

Meditation is increasingly popular as Americans discover its benefits for everything from reducing anxiety to relieving insomnia. And for years, professional sports teams, celebrities and high-achieving business leaders have found there’s no better place to meditate than floating in a dark tank of water saturated with Epsom salt and heated to skin temperature.

In our new book, Floating in Quiet Darkness: How the Floatation Tank Has Changed Our Lives and Is Changing the World, we outline some of the ways floating helps people achieve the deepest states of meditation:

  • Fast Track to Zen: In a February 5, 2018, article in Men’s Health Magazine, Deanna DeBara described floating as “like meditating on steroids. I was able to access the kind of deep, internal calm that I’d only read about in meditation books – and I was able to do it in about 30 minutes."
  • Immersive Stress Relief for Mind & Body: Research finds floating helps reduce stress and anxiety, provides relief for aching muscles, and contributes to an increased ability to focus. The rest, relaxation, rejuvenation is so profound, that the floating experience is like taking a vacation in an hour.
  • No Practice Required: For centuries, people worldwide have engaged in practices such as yoga and meditation to transcend physical and mental phenomena, and realize the original state of consciousness in which nothing is happening. Floating is designed to help people achieve this state effortlessly.

Floating, which is effortless, essentially eliminates "practicing" at transcending. There is nothing to learn, nothing to do. Upon being in the floating environment, the body relaxes completely, the mind releases and the consciousness is free to be in its original state, like a clear sky.
