I’m trying to cut back on alcohol. However, I get bored sipping on plain water every evening, and I don’t drink soda and avoid caffeine after around 2 p.m. What to do?!
Why not make a virgin mojito, one of my favorite cocktails, when I’m feeling the need to change things up? This mocktail recipe, inspired by SustainableCooks.com, was quick and easy, plus the non-alcoholic cocktail tasted pretty close to the real thing. But the best part was I could have two or three (if I wanted) without a hangover the next morning!
To make this mocktail mojito recipe you will need fresh mint leaves (read about the health benefits of mint), limes for juicing, sparking water and simple syrup, which is made with water and honey (no refined sugar!).
This virgin Cuban mocktail recipe is a refreshing choice for happy hours outdoors or enjoy it at brunches, baby or wedding showers or just sitting on the porch with a good book!
Cuisine: Cuban
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 1
Ingredients
- 15 mint leaves (approximately) for the glass plus another 10 - 12 for the simple syrup
- 2 tablespoons lime juice (or more if you like your mojitos a little tarter)
- 10 ounces sparkling water
- 2 tablespoons simple syrup
Simple Syrup
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup honey
Recipe Notes
- You can use sugar for the simple syrup, typically a 1:1 ratio of sugar to water, which will be sweeter than the honey simple syrup.
- The simple syrup will last in an airtight container for up to four weeks in the refrigerator.
- You can substitute 1/4 cup of limeade for the lime juice and simple syrup mixture.
- Use a cocktail shaker for a “shaken, not stirred” drink. This also make straining out the mint easier.
- This recipe makes one serving, but for a lighter version, split the lime/mint/simple syrup between two glasses with 10 ounces of sparkling water per glass. You can easily double, triple or quadruple if you’re serving a group.
Here’s how to make it:
- To make the simple syrup, pour water and honey in a saucepan. Add about 10 mint leaves, if desired. Heat over low until the honey dissolves, about 10 minutes. Let the syrup cool. (You’ll only be using 2 tablespoons of this syrup for your drink. See Recipe Notes for how to store the rest.)
- Place the mint leaves and lime juice in a cup or glass and muddle them together, using a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon, for 1 minute. Muddling crushes the leaves and releases their oils and flavor.
- Add 2 tablespoons of the simple syrup to the lime juice/mint mixture and stir.
- Using a small strainer, strain out the muddled mint leaves and pour this mixture over ice. Add the sparkling water last. Serve with a slice of lime and a sprig of mint as garnish. Cheers!
