My husband loves fried eggs, but I hate washing frying pans. For that reason, this fried egg recipe, inspired by a TikTok video showing how to “fry” an egg between paper plates in the microwave, caught my eye. However, the flip side (pun intended) is that eggs in the microwave are known for exploding. I was a little nervous to give it a try.
Approaching this breakfast recipe with a healthy degree of caution, I taped the plates together to prevent a mess in my microwave, hit "start" and held my breath. I’m happy to report that my “over-easy” egg did not explode and it came out great!
The only real difference between this method and frying is you don’t have the crispy edges or browning, but it was just as tasty. To make this microwave fried egg recipe you just need a plate, nonstick cooking spray, eggs, salt and black pepper. Serve the eggs for breakfast, brunch or as a protein-rich snack, and be sure to read about the health benefits of eggs!

Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 1 minute
Cook Time: 1 minute
Total Time: 2 minutes
Servings: 1
Ingredients
- 1 egg
- salt and black pepper, to taste
- nonstick cooking spray
Recipe Notes
- I taped the plates together, just in case the egg decided to explode and blow the top plate off. I’m not certain that’s necessary, but better safe than sorry!
- You may need to experiment with times to get the egg cooked the way you like it.
- If your plate is big enough (and your eggs small enough), you could cook two, maybe three, eggs at a time.
Here’s how to make it:
- Spray one plate with nonstick cooking spray. Crack an egg on that plate. Salt and pepper to taste.
- Place the second paper plate on top (see Recipe Notes about attaching plates together).
- Place the double-decker plates in the microwave and cook on full power: 1 minute for a slightly runny middle, a little less if you want a true over-easy egg and about 1 1/2 minutes for an over-hard egg.
- Serve the egg as desired.
