Recipe Notes

  • Keep tasting as you add the ingredients and if you like a little more flavor, add a dash of garlic salt or extra red pepper.
  • While just using the tops of the buns makes for a prettier dish, you can use the bottoms, too!
  • You can’t eat these sloppy joes as an actual sandwich, but be sure to get a bit of both toasty roll and ground beef mixture in each bite.
  • Try this recipe with ground turkey instead of ground beef.

Here’s how to make it:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large oven-proof skillet over medium-high heat. Add chopped onions and half the salt and cook until softened. Remove onions from pan.
  2. Add ground beef to the pan and stir in the remainder of the salt. Cook until browned. Transfer ground beef to a plate lined with paper towels. Clean drippings from the pan.
  3. Return onion and ground beef to the pan over medium heat and add garlic, red pepper, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, tomatoes and tomato paste. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer for three minutes. Remove from heat.
  4. Top the mixture with a thick layer of cheddar cheese. Split rolls in half and place the tops of the rolls over the ground beef mixture. Brush with melted butter. Bake in preheated 400-degree F oven for about 10 minutes, until rolls are toasty and cheese is melted.
