My Italian dinner the other night turned out amazing! Not only did I discover my new favorite homemade classic marinara sauce recipe, but made meatballs that really did melt in my mouth. The Italian meatballs were soft and moist, and loaded with flavor. They complemented the rich pasta sauce perfectly. I cannot wait to make them again.
Here is your shopping list for these homemade meatballs: ground beef, dry Italian breadcrumbs, milk, onion, garlic, eggs and Parmesan cheese. The ingredients are gently mixed together, seasoned well with salt and pepper, shaped into meatballs and either baked or pan-fried in a skillet. What you do with them next is your call! I simmered them for a few minutes in my marinara sauce before ladling it over fresh-cooked spaghetti noodles.
I doubled the high-protein recipe so I could freeze some of the meatballs for dinner later. To do this, shape into meatballs and put them into a baking pan. Freeze until firm and then pop them into a freezer storage bag. (Check out the health benefits of protein.)
To bake the meatballs, but them into an oiled baking pan. Bake in a preheated 400-degree F oven for about 20 minutes or until cooked through.
These meatballs would be delicious to use in any meatball casserole recipe. I served my pasta dinner with a side of garlic bread and a fresh garden salad.
Cuisine: Italian
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 to 20 minutes
Total Time: 20 to 30 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup dry Italian breadcrumbs
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely minced
- 3 - 4 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
- 1 egg
- 1/4 - 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Here's how to make it:
- Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl. Season well with salt and black pepper.
- Mix until combined. Do not overmix. Shape into meatballs. (Overmixing will result in tough meatballs.)
- To fry the meatballs, heat a little olive oil in a skillet. Cook the meatballs until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 10 minutes, depending on size. (See the introduction above for how to bake the meatballs.)
- If you're going to simmer them in a sauce, add them now. Store the meatballs in an airtight container in the ridge or freeze for later.
