Amish Funeral Pie Recipe: A Sweet Raisin Pie Recipe With a Story by 30Seconds Food

Funeral pie, also called raisin pie, was served at Amish and Old Order Mennonite gatherings for friends and family after a funeral. When someone passed away – friend, family, neighbor – a raisin pie would be baked and given as a gift to pay last respects.

Servings: Makes 1 pie
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- dash of salt
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 cups raisins
- 2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 3 tablespoons butter
- pastry for 9-inch double crust pie (homemade or frozen)
Here's how to make it:
- Combine the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, allspice, salt and cornstarch in a bowl. Set aside.
- Put the raisins and water into a saucepot. Cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes or until raisins plump up.
- Add the sugar mixture and cook, stirring, until mixture bubbles. Add the vinegar and butter and cook until butter melts. Let the mixture cool.
- Line the bottom of a pie plate with the bottom crust. Pour the filling into the pie shell. Cover with the top pie crust. Cut a few slits or make a lattice design.
- Bake in a preheated 400-degree F oven for about 25 to 35 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool before serving.
