Chili crunch is one of my favorite condiments. I've used the spicy oil on Asian dumplings, egg rolls, eggs (check out my recipe for chili crunch fried eggs), spring rolls, chicken, pork and have stirred it into rice noodles and fried rice. One day I thought, why can't I make homemade chili crunch oil? And guess what? I did!
This chili crunch recipe is similar to Trader Joe's Chili Onion Crunch, which is one of my favorites. This copycat recipe is so easy to whip up! In about five minutes the chili crunch is ready to be used on your favorite meals.
Here is your shopping list for this DIY chili crunch recipe: healthy olive oil, crushed red pepper flakes, ground paprika, dehydrated onions, dehydrated garlic, dehydrated bell pepper (see Recipe Notes) and kosher salt.

Cook Time: 2 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 10
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (or to taste)
- 3/4 teaspoon ground paprika
- 3 tablespoons dehydrated minced onions or dehydrated minced toasted onion (or a combination)
- 1 tablespoon dehydrated minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon dehydrated minced bell pepper (see Recipe Notes)
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Recipe Notes
- Store this spicy chili onion crunch in the pantry, not the refrigerator, because it will harden if it gets cold.
- You could omit the dehydrated bell pepper and add more dehydrated onion and garlic.
Here's how to make it:
- In a small saucepot, heat the olive oil, crushed red pepper flakes and paprika. Cook over very low heat, stirring, for about 1 or 2 minutes or until it is fragrant.
- Put the remaining ingredients into a small mason jar. Pour in the infused oil and stir to combine.
