Ingredients
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1/2 cup dark molasses
- 1 cup boiling water
- 3 1/2 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Here's how to make it:
- Beat the sugar and shortening together in a bowl. Add the molasses and boiling water. Stir to combine.
- In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon and cloves. Add this mixture to the wet ingredients. Beat well. Add the eggs and beat again. Fold in the walnuts, if using.
- Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan. Bake in a preheated 350-degree F oven for about 40 minutes.
