German Sweet & Sour Red Cabbage Recipe Is an Oktoberfest Classic

Sweet and tangy, this simple cabbage side dish goes well with so many proteins – from beef to pork to chicken. If you attend an Oktoberfest celebration, you're sure to find this sweet and sour red cabbage recipe being served.

This German cabbage recipe is so easy to make. With just four simple ingredients, it's a snap to whip up for any dinner.

Here's how to make it:

  1. Melt the butter in a large pot. Add the cabbage and cook until it wilts, about 5 to 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Add the sugar and vinegar. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat, cover and cook until cabbage is very soft, about 30 minutes. Taste and add more salt and pepper, if needed.
