The fall season seems to also be pie-making season! Here's a delicious pie recipe we can thank the Amish for. Shoofly pie is a Pennsylvania Dutch Amish recipe from the 1880s. Shoofly pie has been a staple in for the Amish and Mennonites, and it has the stories and folklore to go along with it. Many say the name of the pie comes from flies being attracted to the sweet filling. We can't blame them!
The filling of this Amish pie is made with molasses, water and baking soda. The topping is a combination of flour, dark brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and butter. How can all those ingredients be bad when baked into a pie?
The Amish usually serve shoofly pie for breakfast with coffee. This shoofly pie recipe is easy to make and will satisfy that sweet tooth for dessert, too. This molasses pie is bursting with sweet old-fashioned goodness everyone will enjoy!

- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter

Recipe Notes
- You could add other warm baking spices to this pie like cloves, cardamom and allspice.
- Store the pie in an airtight container to keep it fresh.
Here's how to make it:
- Put the pie crust into the bottom of a deep dish pie plate (we suggest using a 10-inch deep pie plate). Flute the edges.
- Combine all the topping ingredients in a bowl. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work it together until it's crumbly.
- To make the filling, combine the molasses, water and baking soda in a bowl. Mix well. Pour into the pie shell.
- Mix some of the topping mixture into the filling itself, to thicken filling. Spread the rest of the topping mixture over the filling until it is evenly covered.
- Bake in a preheated 450-degree F oven for about 15 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350 degrees F and continue baking about 20 more minutes or until set.
