"Can I have a side of ranch?" If I only had a dollar for every time I heard that when going out to eat. And while I rarely use ranch on my salads (I'm an oil and vinegar kind of person), I always have a bottle of ranch in the fridge (try my rosemary ranch marinated chicken!).
The best ranch dressing is homemade. Find me a restaurant that makes a great homemade ranch and I forget all about that oil and vinegar. Here are two versions of ranch dressing to try at home. One is a quick version when you're short on time or there's not a fresh herb within miles. The other takes a just a little more time but showcases those fresh, healthy herbs. My family loves both.

For the quick ranch dressing you'll need:
- 3/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- black pepper, to taste
- 1 - 2 cloves garlic, minced
Here's how you make it:
- Combine all ingredients and mix well. Refrigerate until ready to use.
For the fresh herbs ranch dressing you'll need:
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/3 cup chopped fresh herbs (parsley, dill, chives, tarragon, etc.)
- 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 - 2 cloves garlic, minced

- Whisk together the buttermilk, mayo, lemon juice and garlic.
- Stir in the herbs. Season with salt and pepper. Refrigerate until ready to use.
