Homemade Salad Dressings: How to Make Ranch Dressing 2 Ways!

"Can I have a side of ranch?" If I only had a dollar for every time I heard that when going out to eat. And while I rarely use ranch on my salads (I'm an oil and vinegar kind of person), I always have a bottle of ranch in the fridge (try my rosemary ranch marinated chicken!). But the best ranch dressing is homemade. Find me a restaurant that makes a great homemade ranch and I forget all about that oil and vinegar. Here are two versions of ranch dressing to try at home. One is a quick version when you're short on time or there's not a fresh herb within miles. The other takes a just a little more time but showcases those fresh, healthy herbs. My family loves both.

For the quick ranch dressing you'll need:

  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • black pepper, to taste
  • 1 - 2 cloves garlic, minced

Here's how you make it:

  1. Combine all ingredients and mix well. Refrigerate until ready to use.

For the fresh herbs ranch dressing you'll need:

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh herbs (parsley, dill, chives, tarragon, etc.)
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 - 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • salt and pepper

Here’s how you make it:

  1. Whisk together the buttermilk, mayo, lemon juice and garlic.
  2. Stir in the herbs. Season with salt and pepper. Refrigerate until ready to use.
