Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey In Spain: A Spiritual Experience In the Catalan Mountains by Elisa Schmitz
Spain is one of my favorite countries. The people, the culture, the history, the warmth, the sights, the food, the architecture, the music ... I could go on and on. Spain is amazing. Just take a look at this stunning view from one of my favorite places in Catalonia, Spain: Montserrat!
Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey is an abbey of the Order of Saint Benedict on the mountain of Montserrat in in Monistrol de Montserrat, Catalonia, Spain. The mountain, of religious significance since pre-Christian time, is located approximately 45 km northwest of Barcelona. At 1,236 meters high, the mountain, known to the Catalans as Montsagrat or “Sacred Mountain,” offers an incredible view.
From the monastery, it is about 300 meters to the peak of the mountain. A funicular, similar to a cable car system, goes almost all the way up to the summit. From there, several well-marked and popular hiking trails lead through the nature park Montserrat. At 1,236 meters high, the mountain, with its unusual faces-like appearance, offers an almost indescribable view that will take your breath away.
Renowned for enshrining the image of the virgin of Montserrat, the abbey draws thousands of pilgrims and tourists. The monastery was founded in the 10th century and more than 150 monks still live there, making this special place seem even more holy.
The surrounding natural park offers breathtaking views of the Catalan hinterland and many scenic hiking trails leading to abandoned dwellings. Be sure to visit the museum, the basilica, the restaurants and its famous Black Madonna, where pilgrims from around the world come to pay homage. Being at Montserrat is a spiritually breathtaking experience!
