The highly anticipated movie, Remarkably Bright Creatures, will debut on Netflix on May 8, 2026. The movie starring Sally Field is based on the best-selling novel with the same name by Shelby Van Pelt. While we all love Sally Field, the star of Remarkably Bright Creatures is Marcellus, a Giant Pacific Octopus.
Octopuses are amazing creatures. Octopuses are often compared to a 3-year-old human child in regards to cognitive ability, problem-solving and curiosity. How much do you know about these remarkably bright sea creatures? Here are some fun facts about octopuses from Shedd Aquarium:
- Octopuses have blue blood. "Not from royal genes, but from copper. Unlike a lot of other marine invertebrates, octopuses have a high metabolic rate, and therefore a high demand for oxygen. Copper-based hemocyanin is more efficient for transporting oxygen at low temperatures and low oxygen concentrations than is the iron-based hemoglobin that makes our blood red."
- Octopuses also have three hearts. Two of the hearts pump blood through the gills and the third circulates the blood to the organs.
- Octopuses change colors like a lizard. "Octopuses, along with squids and cuttlefishes, are masters of camouflage, literally changing color, brightness, pattern and even texture in a flash to hide in plain sight or advertise for a mate."
- Octopuses really are remarkably bright creatures! "Octopuses are standouts among cephalopods, and among all invertebrates, for their large brains. They can navigate mazes, solve problems, remember, predict, use tools and take apart just about anything from a crab to a lock – all but that last one sophisticated hunting behaviors."
