Dryer Fires: Cleaning the Dryer Vent Is Easy With This Common Yard Tool by Jan Mostrom

Dryer vent fires are a real safety issue. The most common cause of dryer fires is the result of lint buildup in the dryer and exhaust duct. Dryer vents need to be cleaned on a regular basis to avoid the lint buildup that restricts airflow. When the airflow is restricted, clothes take longer to dry and fire risk increases. My neighbor usually helps remind me that I need to clean mine at least once or twice a year because he can see the build up on his side of our house.
This easy trick lets you clean your vents with very little effort and just this one garden tool: a leaf blower!
If you don't have a leaf blower, see if a neighbor will let you borrow theirs (that's what I did!). Here is the easy instructions with photos on how to keep your house safe from lint build up and any potential fire danger.
- Pull your dryer out from the wall to expose the wall vent.
- Clean out the lint from the back of the dryer where it attaches to the wall and also from the wall vent as far as you can reach with your hand.
- Take the leaf blower and insert it into the vent that is attached to the wall.
- Wrap a towel around the vent and the blower and turn on. Blow out the vent for about one minute and push back the dryer to connect the dryer to the vent on the wall.
Make sure to clean your vents at least once a year to increase dryer efficiency and reduce fire risk at your home!
