International Museum Day: 3 Tips for Visiting Museums With Kids by Kandice Cole

May 18th is International Museum Day! In honor of this special day, here are my favorite tips for visiting museums with children:
- Visit local museums. Many cities and towns have museums that are about all kinds of topics. They are usually much smaller than what we typically think of with museums. In the Houston area, we have great local museums like the Black Cowboy Museum in Rosenberg, Art Car Museum in Houston, and MKT Railroad Museum in Katy. These museums usually are much easier to navigate with children and are low cost or even free in some cases.
- Take your time with exhibits. Instead of trying to fit every exhibit in, especially at larger museums, consider returning back a few times over a year. To offset costs, look into becoming a member at your favorite museum. This will give you time to explore specific exhibits and engage with your children as you learn together.
- Ask questions. While moving through exhibits ask your child what they are thinking or feeling as they view the exhibits. This ensures that any museum experience is interactive! I am always amazed at what my daughter is thinking about when she is viewing a piece or learning something new.
