We’re so glad to share our lice knowledge with the 30Seconds community! Thank you for having us. Q: What was the inspiration for the WelComb® and how did it come to be?

Great question! Our founder, Jay, had lice when he was 10 and his mother used a metal lice comb that had tight teeth to rid him of lice. Unfortunately, the manufacturer of that comb went out of business. But years later, Jay’s dad found the comb in the basement!

Jay decided to bring it back, but this time as a plastic comb. Our incredible plastics manufacturer, Maynard, was able to make small, rigid teeth that work even better than the metal comb!

School nurses, who are often the ones discovering a lice infestation, were thrilled to see the WelComb come to life. They always commented on how much better that old metal comb was than current lice removal combs. And now they have the benefit of the WelComb!

Q: How big of a problem is lice? How much does it impact families each year?

First of all, ANYONE with hair can get lice. Each year, six to 12 million people in the U.S. have a lice infestation. That being said, children aged 3 to 11 are most commonly afflicted with lice because they have more head-to-head contact than older children.

That’s right! Lice spread by running from one head to the other. But luckily, they can’t survive for more than 24 hours without their food supply (blood). That’s why physically removing them from the head is so important!

Q: Do you have any suggestions for how parents can help prevent their kids from getting lice in the first place?

The only surefire way to prevent the spread of lice is to not touch the head or hair of someone who has lice. Sounds easy enough, but you might not know if someone has lice!If you’re concerned your child might have lice or if someone in their class already has it, the best thing you can do is detect it early.

Simply comb through your child’s hair with the WelComb to look for any lice or nits. If you see one, comb it out. Check your child daily and if you ever find a louse or nit, continue checks for up to two weeks after you find no more lice or nits.

Q: Do you have any suggestions for how to keep kids calm when diagnosing and removing lice? How can we get them to not freak out (and not freak out ourselves)?!

Above all else, we recommend keeping calm. If you scream when you find a louse on your child’s head, you’ll only freak them out more! Lice is such a taboo subject, so the more you can normalize it with your child, the better. People who get lice are NOT dirty, it can truly happen to anyone. Make sure your child knows that having lice is common and is not something to be ashamed of.

When you’re removing lice and nits from your child’s head, it’s important to keep them still and distracted (especially the younger kiddos!).During lice removal sessions, have your child watch a movie, play a video game or read a book. Anything that will keep them focused on anything but the lice!

This is definitely a myth! Lice won't avoid hair products. However, they do prefer to stick to the same blood type. If your mom and your daughter don't have the same blood type, that could be why the lice stayed put. #30seconds

Q: Do you have any advice for what to do after you have removed the lice to make sure it is all gone and not in your sheets, toys, etc.?

The good news is that lice can’t live for more than 24 hours off a human head. That means they can't survive on toys or linens. So before you start disinfecting your entire home, take a minute to think about what your child has come into contact with over the last day.

Rationally and calmly determine how to best use your cleaning time based on where lice may actually be hanging out. The best method for cleaning is to simply vacuum. Also, understand that lice can’t jump or fly. The ONLY way they’ll spread is if the head touches another head. They can also travel via strands of hair, so avoid sharing hairbrushes with someone that has lice.

Q: What are your top three tips for parents about lice and lice removal?
