Kings Park in Perth: Flora, Fauna & Festivals in Western Australia by Fiona Whiley

Kings Park in Perth, Australia, is one of the world’s largest inner city parks, incorporating the Western Australian Botanic Garden. The park overlooks Perth CBD and water areas of the Swan and Canning rivers. The park is free to enter and has over 3000 species of native flora, most of which are not found anywhere else on the planet.

Free public transport buses will bring you to the park, which is only a short distance from the city center. Each year in September there is a festival in the park, taking advantage of all the wildflowers in bloom to create a beautiful backdrop for the different activities.

The park is a mixture of open-grassed areas, planted botanical gardens and preserved natural bushland, with well-maintained pathways interconnecting throughout the different areas. The central fountain is the focal point of rolling grass-covered hills, where families can enjoy a picnic lunch under the shade of several groups of trees. Kids love playing around the fountain which has different jets moving through a timed sequence.

We visited late in September so that we could enjoy the wildflowers on display in the gardens, and spent an easy day walking around and enjoying the park.
