Facing Life’s Challenges Together: In Marriage, That’s When the Butterflies Really Fly

I’ve been going through some stuff lately. It’s heavy and it can sometimes stop me in my tracks. I’ve been fortunate to have some amazing people help get me through it. The kind who make you feel like they’re there to catch you if you fall. Because no matter how strong you are, sometimes you fall. And even though you believe you’ll be OK if you do, it helps to know someone is there to pick you up and brush you off. I’m so grateful for those who are there to help me up.

At the top of that list is my husband, Dieter. No matter what comes at us, he’s with me every step of the way. The good, the bad, the in between. We‘ve gotten good at facing each challenge, together. We pick each other up. We dust each other off. We hold each other’s hand. One step at a time.

We took this photo a few days ago, in the fresh falling snow. As we set out on our walk, I slipped and nearly took a tumble. Dieter grabbed my hand, looked me in the eye and said, “We’ve got this, you and me together, one step at a time.” And then we put one foot in front of the other and forged a path through the snow, hand in hand, one step at a time. The footprints we made, side by side, were a reminder that together, we can overcome any challenge. On our own time and at our own speed. Together, we’ve got this.

We’ll celebrate our eighth wedding anniversary this summer, and I still think of us as newlyweds. I feel the ghosts of butterflies past when I remember the romantic Valentine’s Days and glamorous global adventures we shared, not so long ago on the calendar, and yet another lifetime.

While I loved the romance and glamour of our jet-setting life, what matters most to me is the feeling I get when he grabs my hand, looks me in the eye and tells me we’ve got this. And then we forge our path together, hand in hand, wherever it may take us, one step at a time. In marriage, that’s when the butterflies seriously fly.
