Have You Checked Your Privilege Lately? It's Worth It! Here's My Story... by Laurie Balles Simpson

I checked my privilege today. I went for my bi-annual teeth cleaning at the dentist. As I was chatting with the hygienist I said, “I was thinking I must have a dentist appointment coming up because my teeth are feeling nasty.”
As soon as I said it I thought about how just five years ago, I hadn’t been to the dentist in over three years because I had no dental coverage and in no way the money to cover a cleaning or exam out of pocket. It brought me back to a time when I was barely able to keep the electricity on and food on the table. It brought me back to when I questioned how the hell I got to this place and to how I’ll ever get out.
As I sat there thinking, “I actually just said that out loud? I must have an appointment coming soon because my teeth feel nasty?” I checked myself. Seriously, Laurie?
As much as I take credit for the hard work I’ve put in, I have always, my whole life, put the hard work in. And five years ago I was still in that place.
I have been blessed and privileged and I am truly grateful. I look forward to many, many more years of checking myself.
