Change Can Be Overwhelming: Why You Should Build New Habits One Step at a Time Mindfulness Fitness

I used to overwhelm myself by trying to make all my life changes at once. Now I work on one thing at a time. If it is a big one, I break it down into smaller habits. Once one thing becomes habit, I move on to the next change.

For example, I wanted to start working out. So now when I get home from dropping everyone off in the morning, I turn on my YouTube workout playlist and get to it. If a move is too difficult I make alterations to suit the shape I'm in right now or I just take a water break. The point isn't to be perfect – the point is to get in the habit of exercising every morning. Once this has become routine I will begin to take on the more challenging exercises. Maybe, one day, I'll even be able to do this outside or at a gym – around other people! But for now, I'm happy doing my 15 to 30 minutes at home, alone, with my dog.

We live in a world filled with instant satisfaction. I think this has colored my view of how things should be. It is a little frustrating because I want to see change immediately, but I need to remember that it took time for me to become the couch potato that I am today, so it is going to take at least as much time to be the person I want to be tomorrow.

If you're in the same position as me, give yourself some love and grace and take it one step at a time. You'll get there.
