Flu Season Is Here: 4 Things You Need to Know if You Still Haven’t Gotten Your Flu Shot Family Health

Flu season has begun, and it’s starting to gain momentum. Every year, less than half of Americans get a flu shot, but some seasons are a lot worse than others. If you’re still on the fence, here’s what you need to know:

  • The flu is deadly, even during a mild season. Last year's flu season (2018-2019) was tame, but more than 15 million people still got sick and nearly 16,000 people died.
  • This year’s vaccination is a good match. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believes the current vaccine, which is an updated version of last year’s highly effective vaccine, is a good match against both the A and B strains circulating.
  • The flu vaccination can prevent dangerous complications. Even if the flu shot doesn’t prevent the flu, it will likely save you from getting a severe case.
  • Your flu shot helps protect people who can’t get one. Some people can’t get vaccinated, so restricting the spread of the virus by getting your shot will help protect them, too.

Last year, people who got the flu shot were half as likely to get sick – favorable odds for anyone who has ever been sidelined during the holidays with a nasty case. Flu season peaks between December and February, so it’s not too late to protect yourself and others!
