What the Heck is Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease? Find Out!

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is caused by enteroviruses and can quickly spread among, with kids under the age of 5 most susceptible. Parents should watch out for symptoms and take measures to reduce contact of the infected child with other kids.

The symptoms include:

  • mouth ulcers (on inside of mouth or sides of tongue)
  • a rash or blisters on palms of hands and soles of feet
  • sore throat
  • lethargy
  • poor appetite
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea

According to WebMD, hand-foot-and-mouth disease usually doesn't need treatment. To relieve your child's symptoms:

  • Offer your child plenty of cool fluids to help with sore throat (ice cream, Popsicles).
  • Avoid acidic or spicy foods and drinks.
  • For fever/pain, give acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Do not give kids aspirin.

Once HFMD is diagnosed, parents should inform schools or activity classes that the child has attended in previous two weeks. Always consult your doctor with questions about your child's health.
