Fun Fact: While we love making apple fritters in the U.S., they did not originate here. According to Bend Source Weekly, "the origins of apple fritters lie in Europe where, in modern Christmas markets from Italy to Germany to England, you find stalls that core apples, then slice them horizontally, battering and frying them up before sprinkling with powdered or cinnamon sugar."

Fritters
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup milk
- juice from 1 lemon
- 2 - 3 cups chopped apples (Granny Smith work well)
- vegetable oil, for frying
Glaze
- 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 teaspoons water (or as needed)
Recipe Notes
- The number of servings will vary depending on how big you make your fritters.
- Use whatever apples you like, but apples that work best for pies will work best for these fritters, too.
- Do not crowd the pan when frying the fritters. You may have to fry in batches.
- You could sprinkle the tops with extra ground cinnamon or mix some into the glaze.
- Store the fritters in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
Here's how to make it:
- Cream together the granulated sugar and eggs with an electric mixer.
- Add the flour, baking powder, ground cinnamon, salt and milk. Mix well.
- In another mixing bowl, toss the apples with the lemon juice. Add the apples to the batter. Stir to combine.
- Heat about 2 inches of oil in a skillet to 375 degrees F. Drop mounds of the fritter batter into hot oil. Cook until golden brown on one side. Carefully flip the fritters cover and cook until golden and cooked through, about 2 to 3 minutes per side. Remove to a paper towel.
- Make the glaze by stirring together all the ingredients. Drizzle or brush the glaze over the hot fritters. Let the fritters cool slightly before serving.
