How to Pit Fresh Cherries: 3 Easy Ways to Remove the Pits From Cherries Fruit Cooking Tips
I really enjoy going to my local farmers market to see what beautiful produce is available that week. A few weeks ago I went and could not resist the beautiful summer cherries. They were just the right amount of ruby red to catch my eye and I just had to bring them home.
I found a gorgeous recipe for a cherry pie crumble bars, and then I realized I had never actually pitted cherries before, and that is what I needed for the dessert recipe. After doing a bit of research, I tried three methods to easily and quickly take cherry pits out.
- I tried cutting them in half and removing the pit by hand. This method absolutely works but not if you need whole cherries for the presentation – and it takes a bit more time with this method.
- I tried pushing the pit through with the end of a chopstick. Again this worked, but far better if I used the fatter end of the stick. I also have reusable chopsticks, which I think is better than disposable wood ones to avoid any splinters that might be left in the cherry.
- The best option I found was using a metal reusable straw that I had in my drawer. I just inserted the straw into the cherry and pushed the pit right out the other side. My hands got a fair amount of cherry juice on them, but they easily washed clean and I was ready to use the cherries in my recipe in about 10 minutes. My straw was a bit narrower than a typical straw, so the cherry pit only got caught once.
