Ahi tuna, or yellowfin tuna, is a fish found all over the world. Ahi is a Hawaiian word that means fire. In pre-plantation days in Hawaii when yellowfin tuna was caught on a line, the traction from the strong-swimming fish made the line look like it was one fire. It all makes sense now, right?

When searing tuna, be sure to buy the highest quality and the freshest you can find. Seared ahi tuna is a simple dish that has minimal ingredients, prep and cooking time. Seared ahi tuna can be served with a dipping sauce, over a salad, in poke bowls, as the main protein with a vegetable or even in a sandwich. Here's a simple method for searing ahi tuna.

Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 2

Ingredients

  • 2 raw ahi tuna steaks (about 1-inch thick), patted dry
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Here's how to make it:

  1. Season both sides of the tuna with salt and pepper. Coat the tuna with the sesame seeds, pressing to they stick.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. When oil starts to smoke, put the tuna into the pan.
  3. Cook the tuna for about 30 to 45 seconds per side (or longer if you like it more done). Remove to a plate and let it rest for 3 minutes. Slice the tuna against the grain.
