You know you're a foodie when you literally dream up new recipes while you sleep. That's exactly what happened with this Boursin cheese bread recipe. I was dreaming about spreading creamy garlic Boursin cheese onto a loaf of crusty bread when I took the idea one step further. I thought, "What would happen if I baked the Boursin into the bread instead?" When I woke up, I decided to find out.
This creamy garlic Boursin cheese bread recipe with fresh herbs has all the dreamy flavor of my favorite Boursin cheese – baked into a loaf of crusty bread. Amazing! Boursin, the herb cheese spread that's a blend of garlic, parsley and chives folded into Gournay cheese, was created by a young French cheesemaker named François Boursin in 1963. His world-famous recipe was inspired by fromage frais, a traditional French cheese dish that blends garlic, fresh cream, soft cheese and herbs. The divinely delicious cheese is wonderful on its own or used as a flavorful ingredient in many recipes – like this one.
This savory bread recipe includes Boursin, eggs, Greek yogurt (check out the health benefits of Greek yogurt) and mozzarella cheese, which all add protein. The fresh herbs (I used chives and parsley, just like what's in Boursin) and olive oil give it a distinctly Mediterranean flavor. These ingredients help to create a nutritious loaf of bread that's absolutely delicious. Plus, check out the health benefits of protein, the health benefits of chives and the health benefits of parsley. This simple bread recipe requires just a few minutes of prep (and only one bowl), then it bakes up into a crusty loaf that's perfect to enjoy any time.
To make this flavorful Boursin garlic bread recipe, you'll need to gather the following nourishing ingredients: extra virgin olive oil, eggs, Boursin cheese, plain Greek yogurt, flour (all-purpose or gluten-free), baking powder, salt, shredded mozzarella cheese, and fresh herbs (I used chives and parsley). You combine the ingredients then bake the loaf until it's a lovely golden brown.
Serve this creamy garlic and herb bread on its own any time, as a vegetarian side dish, sliced for sandwiches at lunchtime or alongside just about any dinner. We love this new way to enjoy the fabulous flavor of Boursin cheese!
Cuisine: American / French / Mediterranean
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 40 to 50 minutes (ovens vary)
Total Time: 50 to 60 minutes
Servings: 10
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- 5.3 ounces (1 package) Boursin garlic and herbs cheese, at room temperature
- 1/2 cup low-fat plain Greek yogurt
- 1 1/2 cups flour (all-purpose or gluten-free flour)
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 3 tablespoons fresh herbs, diced (I used parsley and chives, but you could use rosemary, basil, etc.)
Here's how to make it:
- In a large mixing bowl, add the olive oil, eggs, Boursin and Greek yogurt. Whisk to blend.
- Add the flour, baking powder and salt. Add black pepper, to taste, if desired. Mix well to combine. Add the mozzarella and stir to combine. (To make this bread gluten-free, use gluten-free flour.)
- Fold in the fresh herbs. (I used parsley and chives, but you could use rosemary, basil, etc.)
- Evenly spread the batter into an 8x4-inch loaf pan that's been lined with parchment paper.
- Bake in an oven that's been preheated to 350 degrees F until bread is cooked through, crusty and golden (it should pass the toothpick test), about 40 to 50 minutes. (If the loaf is getting too brown, cover the top with aluminum foil.)
- Allow loaf to cool for a few minutes, then remove to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
- Garnish with additional fresh herbs, if desired. Store the bread in an airtight container (in the refrigerator or freezer lasts longer). This bread is extra delicious when toasted.
