Sandwiches. (Cue: big sigh.) A good sandwich is one of my all-time favorite things to eat. Period. But there's nothing worse than going into a restaurant, ordering a sandwich and sitting there thinking you can make better sandwiches at home. Well, this did not happen to me yesterday at Tosca Italian Gourmet. What I found myself doing was eating the sandwich I ordered at this Italian deli as slowly as possible, so I could savor each and every luscious bite. I think I even closed my eyes and pretended I was sitting in an osteria or trattoria in Italy.
The sandwich took me back to my time in Italy. Sandwiches in Italy are simple. Very few ingredients, but the best, highest of quality ingredients. The sandwich I ordered had Prosciutto San Daniele, truffle cream and arugula on homemade focaccia. That's it. The truffle cream took it over the top. I had to try and recreate this Italian sandwich at home.
Here is my take on this Italian deli sandwich. You only need six simple ingredients from your fridge and pantry: focaccia bread (good-quality store-bought or make homemade focaccia bread), prosciutto (get the good stuff from your deli), fresh arugula (check out the health benefits of arugula), cream cheese, black truffle oil (this is not a budget sandwich) and optional Parmesan cheese for the truffle cream. You'll have enough truffle cream for quite a few sandwiches.
Truffle oil is an infused oil that gives you truffle flavor without the extravagant cost of fresh truffles. A tiny bit of truffle oil goes a long way, so use it sparingly!
Serve these elevated ham sandwiches for lunch or dinner, or slice them into smaller sandwiches and skewer with a party pick for fun appetizers. The truffle cream would also be delicious as a spread for crackers or part of a charcuterie board.
Cuisine: Italian

Total Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 1
Ingredients
- 2 slices focaccia bread
- 4 - 5 slices prosciutto
- fresh arugula
Truffle Cream
- 4 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
- 1/2 teaspoon black truffle oil (or to taste)
- 1 - 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan (optional)
- To make the truffle cream, put all the ingredients into a bowl. Use a rubber spatula to stir until thoroughly combined. (If you don't have black truffle oil, you can use white truffle oil.) Use immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve. (If the truffle cream is cold, take it out of the fridge to soften a bit before making your sandwich.)
- To make the sandwich, spread a generous amount of truffle cream on the focaccia. Add the thinly sliced prosciutto and top with the arugula. You can serve the sandwich at room temperature, or heat up the bread quickly in a dry skillet or sandwich press.
